NAWBO-BRC Tidbits - January
Welcome! To NAWBO Tidbits, that monthly email filled
with good news and good-to-know information to brighten your day and enhance
your business.
To have your news appear in NAWBO Tidbits, please
send a short description to info@nawbomaryland.org or
Peg@WordLens.com.
From the President
Our December meeting at Baltimore's Best Party Entertainers was just the thing
to put all those who attended in the holiday spirit! Gia Magliano and her staff
set up beautiful decorations, and Baltimore's Best supplied the DJ/bartender.
We were entertained by flutists Margie Anne Bonnett and Jan Seiden. We learned
about the work done by the Caroline Center to help disadvantaged Baltimore women
become self-sufficient. Thanks to your generous contributions to the raffle and
to the silent auction, we raised over $350 to benefit their programs.
NAWBO has much to offer in 2007. In January, the Public Policy Committee will
present a program on the use of legislative advocacy to benefit our businesses.
NAWBO Public Policy Days are coming up in February. A series of educational seminars
are scheduled for January, February, and March. The Scholarship Committee under
Angie Harcum is hard at work preparing for the award of scholarships in May.
Plans for our Woman Business Owner of the Year Banquet on April 23 are underway.
We will be soliciting silent auction items for the banquet; the proceeds from
the auction will be used for our scholarship fund.
You will be receiving information on all of these activities in the mail and
via email. You can also find information on our website. The Board is very excited
about these coming events, and I hope that the enthusiasm spills over to all
our members. Your involvement in these events, either as a planner, contributor,
spectator, or active participant, is the payoff for your investment in your NAWBO
dues. I urge you to take advantage of these opportunities to your fullest extent.
I wish you peace, prosperity, and success in 2007.
Anne

Does Uncle Sam Have $$$ For You? The Telephone
Excise Tax Credit
Jane Brewer, KAWG&F, has information available about the telephone excise
tax refund. This one-time refund could be large for a company with significant
long distance calls and/or cell phone users. The refund must be claimed on
your personal or business 2006 federal tax return.
Please call or email Jane Brewer for a copy of the Telephone Excise Tax Credit
letter that includes instructions on calculating the tax. KAWG&F is available
to assist with analyzing invoices to determine the amount of the refund, and
you do not have to be a KAWG&F accounting client for help with this work.

Research Forums for Women Business Owners of Color
Women-of-Color Entrepreneurs are starting businesses at six times the rate of
all firms in the US. However, the growth rates in annual revenues and number
of employees of these businesses does not match growth rates of firm starts.
We want to find out why.
In collaboration with Babson College's Center for Women's Leadership, Center
for Women's Business Research will hold research forums throughout the country
in 2007, launching the initiative in Philadelphia on February 21. The forums
will be an opportunity for women business owners of color to network, develop
strategies to grow their businesses, and learn from experts in their fields.
Women can apply to participate at www.womensbusinessresearch.org/womenofcolor.html
